UNICEF USA's 2023 Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF Campaign Delivers Impact for Global Emergencies

This October, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEFs offers people of all ages to learn about UNICEF’s global work and “add some meaning to their Halloweening®”

NEW YORK (October, 2, 2023) – As an ever-evolving campaign that started as a neighborhood donation drive in Philadelphia over 70 years ago, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF has raised more than $195 million for children worldwide. This year, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF donations will go to Global Humanitarian Thematic Fund, which allows UNICEF to be agile in responding to hundreds of emergencies and complex humanitarian situations each year. Funds raised will support UNICEF’s relentless work to ensure children are healthy, educated, protected and respected and will help deliver health care and immunizations, safe water and sanitation, nutrition, education and emergency relief to children where —and when —they need it most.

During the month of October, all are encouraged to visit www.trickortreatforunicef.org to join in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF’s global Halloween experience and raise critical funds and awareness. This year, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF features an online “click-or-treat” experience where participants can “knock” on doors and learn about UNICEF’s work in 190 countries and territories including Mali, Romania and Sri Lanka and virtually visit families and communities. After each visit, participants will be encouraged to take action and provide support for UNICEF's work for children. They can also spread the word about Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF in their communities, on social media and at events using resources on the Trick-or-Treat website and make a donation using the festive QR code.

“Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is a beloved Halloween tradition celebrated over the last 73 years by families all across America, mine included. said Shelley Diamond, Chief Marketing Officer at UNICEF USA. “UNICEF is there for children, wherever and whenever – as long as it takes, from the war in Ukraine to the malnutrition crisis in the Horn of Africa, long term needs in Libya and Morocco, and so much more. We hope to continue to inspire participants to support UNICEF’s relentless and lifesaving work.”

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF began in 1950 when children across the United States collected coins in hand-painted milk cartons to help children affected by World War II. Historically, children went door-to-door on Halloween with the signature orange collection boxes calling out, "Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF!” Originally a grassroots campaign, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF has now evolved into a month-long celebration of Halloween and giving back. In 2022 the iconic, “little orange box” transitioned into an entirely virtual experience, complete with a sleek and modern QR code element, reimagining the campaign for an increasingly digital world.
