FOR EVERY CHILD: ANNUAL REPORT HIGHLIGHTS

Year after year, UNICEF works tirelessly to ensure every child around the world has a safe, healthy, happy childhood, regardless of their circumstances.

Since 1990, UNICEF’s work has helped reduce the number of children under age 5 who die from preventable causes by 57 percent. Today, UNICEF vaccinates nearly half the world’s children, saving 3 million lives every year.

During Fiscal Year 2019, UNICEF USA achieved many milestones.

  • In response to changing U.S. policies, UNICEF USA launched its first-ever programmatic support for children from Latin America seeking asylum in the U.S. This included grants to fund respite centers, advocating for immigration laws and policies that prioritize migrant children’s best interests and launching a pilot program that cares for pregnant asylum-seekers.

  • In response to the Rohingya refugee crisis, UNICEF USA has scaled up its support to Bangladesh to ensure children and families are receiving the care they need. This includes mental health and psychosocial resources for 160,000+ refugee children, education services and school supplies for children out of school and apprenticeships for adolescents in towns near the camps.

  • This year, UNICEF USA partnered with Colombian social enterprise Conceptos Plásticos to launch a project that will recycle plastic waste in Côte D’Ivoire—a country with a widespread plastic waste problem—and use that plastic to produce bricks. With these bricks, UNICEF aims to build a minimum of 500 classrooms by 2021, benefitting more than 25,000 children.

  • Most heartening of all, since our founding in 1947, our supporters’ generosity has enabled us to raise a cumulative total of $8.2 billion in donations and gifts-in-kind, including $568 million in Fiscal Year 2019.
