Typhoon Goni Makes Landfall in the Philippines
One of the worst storms of 2020 tore into the Philippines with intense winds at 5 a.m. Sunday morning.
At least ten people were killed as Typhoon Goni hit the Philippines today, ripping off roofs, toppling power lines and causing flooding in the hardest-hit areas where hundreds of thousands have fled their homes. The strongest typhoon of the year also triggered deadly landslides that buried a number of houses in the southern part of Luzon, the country's most populous island. Power cuts have disrupted telecommunication services and are hampering efforts to assess the extent of the damage.
The storm made landfall at 5 a.m. on November 1 in Bato, Catanduanes with catastrophic winds and intense to torrential rainfall. It made landfall again in Tiwi, Albay and a third time in San Narciso, Quezon. Tropical Cyclone Signal No. 3 was raised in the capital city Manila.

National authorities are addressing emergency preparedness, evacuating almost a million people to government shelters, and have prepared emergency supplies. UNICEF is on the ground and stands ready to support the government’s emergency response.
