Flight lands in Kathmandu carrying vital humanitarian supplies for children and families affected by Nepal floods
NEW YORK (September 4, 2026) – A flight carrying 84 metric tons of critical humanitarian supplies landed in Kathmandu, Nepal this morning, with the support of the European Union Humanitarian Aid. UNICEF is dispatching the supplies to bring urgently needed assistance for children and families affected by the devastating flash floods in the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river basin.
As humanitarian needs continue to rise, thousands of children and families require urgent support across the affected districts. Many families have lost homes, belongings, access to safe water and sanitation, while damage to schools, health facilities and essential infrastructure continues to disrupt children's lives.
The European Union supported flight departed from UNICEF’s global supply and logistics hub in Copenhagen carrying emergency supplies to support hundreds of thousands of people. Lifesaving cargo included acute watery diarrhea (AWD) kits and diagnostic equipment; water tanks, hygiene kits and water treatment supplies; tents; winter clothing kits for infants and children, and learning materials.
"These supplies are arriving at a critical moment for children and families affected by the floods," said Alice Akunga, UNICEF Representative in Nepal. "Thousands of children have seen their lives turned upside down in a matter of minutes. Many have lost their homes, their classrooms, and their sense of normalcy. This shipment will help us deliver urgently needed support and reach children and families with services that protect their health, wellbeing and future."
“The EU stands with the people of Nepal in the aftermath of these devastating floods,” said Thomas Millar, Chargé d’Affairesa.i. at the EU Delegation to Nepal. “As climate change increases the risks of floods, landslides and other disasters, we are supporting communities with essential humanitarian assistance when disaster strikes, while strengthening preparedness, early warning systems and local response capacities to help save lives and build resilience for the future.”
Dozens of trucks have been mobilized and are transporting relief items to some of the hardest-hit communities in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts, where UNICEF teams are working alongside government counterparts and partners. The supplies will help families access safe water, strengthen disease prevention, support children's learning, and ensure frontline health and nutrition workers have the tools to identify and assist vulnerable children and mothers.
Since the floods struck, UNICEF has been working with national and local authorities to deliver emergency assistance using pre-positioned supplies, including health and hygiene supplies, water purification materials, psychosocial support for children and caregivers, and the establishment of child-friendly spaces with recreational materials for children most affected by the disaster.

"Continued support is essential to help children recover, stay healthy, return to learning, and rebuild their lives in the weeks and months ahead. As the scale of the disaster is enormous, and the needs remain significant, every day matters”.
