Conflict in Gaza Kills More Than 160 Children, 1,000 More Injured

Children are bearing the brunt of the worsening violence in Gaza and Israel.

More than 600 Palestinians and 32 Israelis have been killed since violence erupted in Gaza two weeks ago, including more than 160 children. Another 1,100 children have been injured.

"It is outrageous that children in Gaza continue to pay such a heavy price in a conflict for which they have no responsibility," said Maria Calivis, UNICEF's Regional Director in the Middle East & North Africa, in a statement on July 17.

UNICEF estimates that at least 60,000 children in Gaza will need psychological care for trauma. Child protection teams are already working to help children and their caregivers. UNICEF and its partners are also procuring essential pediatric drugs for hospitals and health facilities. In this video below, 8-year-old Abdel Majed Abu Maraheel describes what happened when two missiles hit his home in Gaza City.
