On Tuesday, January 12, Haiti, already burdened by a series of catastrophic natural catastrophes, suffered the most devastating earthquake in its recorded history.  As the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti struggled even prior to the crisis with inadequate access to water, sanitation, and health services.

The earthquake has all but shattered already overburdened infrastructure, leaving in its wake scarcity of life-threatening proportions.  Without food, without clean water or medical supplies, and with an estimated 3 million victims—children, the most vulnerable population in emergency situations, represent almost half of the affected—Haiti's need is truly grave.

Major League Soccer has joined the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to ensure Haiti's children receive the lifesaving nutrition, medicine, and clean water they so desperately need.  Because UNICEF was hard at work in Haiti well before the crisis happened—since 1949—UNICEF is prepared to provide children and their families with the resources and services necessary to save children and preserve childhoods.  Though UNICEF facilities in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince sustained significant damage, UNICEF is ready to ensure the wellbeing of children throughout the impacted region.

UNICEF is developing longterm solutions to Haiti's issues, providing nutrition, health, sanitation, and education services to address the impact of poverty on the children of Haiti.
