Partnership Summary

Making the Elimination of Tetanus a Reality

Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus (MNT) remain one of the most pressing issues facing child survival in the developing world, but with the support of BD, the achievement of global elimination is a reachable goal.

While routine vaccination in the United States has virtually eliminated tetanus as a threat in the daily lives of Americans, nearly 100,000 mothers and newborns still die needlessly from this preventable disease each year. One infant dies from neonatal tetanus every four minutes, and their mothers often perish as well. To eliminate MNT, BD helped support the systematic implementation of a vaccination campaign that targeted 42 nations where the disease remains a major health threat. By providing intensive outreach to remote regions and countries battling extreme poverty, BD is also creating in-roads and foundations in these communities for improved health services that will impact children for future generations.
