The role of UNICEF and partners in the largest vaccine procurement and supply operation in history.
COVID-19 upended the lives of children and families across the globe. From the start of the pandemic, UNICEF worked relentlessly to reduce the spread of the virus and minimize its negative impacts on children.
UNICEF is the only organization with the infrastructure, experience and expertise to lead this effort. Every year, as the world's largest vaccine buyer, UNICEF helps immunize more than 45 percent of the world’s children—in some of the most remote places on Earth.
UNICEF leveraged its unique position and experience to procure and deliver COVID-19 vaccine doses to the world’s poorest countries. UNICEF also used its incredible strength in the areas of community engagement and social mobilization to build demand for vaccines.
By the end of 2022, UNICEF and partners had delivered nearly 2 billion COVID-19 vaccines across low- and middle-income countries.
Efforts to improve access, overcome vaccine nationalism and shortfalls in production continue.
