MALI: A woman is immunized against tetanus in Benkene, a remote village, by a traditional birth attendant trained to promote and administer vaccinations against the disease.

Pampers has joined with UNICEF in a multi-year, multi-million dollar initiative to support UNICEF’s efforts to eliminate Maternal & Neonatal Tetanus (MNT). Through the Pampers “One Pack = One Vaccine” campaign around the world, Pampers makes a donation to UNICEF equivalent to the cost of one tetanus vaccine* for each pack of specially marked Pampers sold.

The initiative began in 2006 in the UK and has since expanded to other countries in Western Europe, North America and Japan. The 2008 Pampers campaign in North America—which featured actress and new mother Salma Hayek as spokesperson—has generated funding for over 45 million vaccines.

The initiative—one of the largest international marketing campaigns of its kind conducted by a brand to benefit UNICEF—is now expanding across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and North America. Approximately 100 countries will participate in the 2008-2009 campaign.

The impact of the Pampers campaign is significant—the total donation of approximately $10.8 million over the next three years is expected to fund over 200 million additional tetanus vaccines and protect over 70 million women of child-bearing age. The tetanus vaccines provided by Pampers through the global campaign will improve the lives of mothers and babies in the developing world, helping UNICEF move closer to its goal of eliminating MNT.

* Donation amounts, time periods, and participating Pampers products vary in each market. In North America, from April 7 through August 31 in 2008, the Pampers brand donated 5¢ to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF for every specially-marked pack of Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive, Swaddlers, Cruisers, and Easy Ups diapers and Pampers Sensitive, Swipers, and Clean ‘n Go wipes purchased in the U.S. and Canada to help UNICEF provide one tetanus vaccine to a woman in the developing world. UNICEF does not endorse any brand or product. No portion of the purchase price is tax-deductible.
