In 2007, at the age of 30, Cara was diagnosed with HIBM, an adult-onset degenerative muscle disease. In embracing this life-changing experience and her unique perspective of living with a disability, Cara advocates for children with disabilities around the globe. James H. Shepherd, Jr. James H. Shepherd, Jr. is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Shepherd Center, the nation's largest hospital that specializes in the medical care and rehabilitation of people with spinal cord or acquired brain injuries, MS and other neurological disorders. His near-fatal bodysurfing accident in 1973 led to the founding of Shepherd Center two years later, and he is a staunch advocate for people with disabilities.
