Tyson Chandler's Big Assist

If you are a regular reader of this blog, by now you know that NBA All-Star Tyson Chandler of the New York Knicks is a huge UNICEF supporter.

We’ve worked closely with Tyson and the NBA this year on a number of initiatives that support UNICEF’s mission of creating a world where ZERO children are denied the right to a healthy life filled with opportunity. Now Tyson has been nominated for the NBA’s 2013 Community Assist Award, which honors the NBA player who best reflects the passion that the league and its players have for giving back to the global community. The winning player receives a $25,000 donation to the charity of his choice. Tyson has designated the U.S. Fund for UNICEF as his charity. A fan vote determines the winner, so we need your help!

Tyson’s support is far-reaching. He traveled with his wife and our CEO/President, Caryl Stern, to Tanzania on a UNICEF field visit last summer right after winning a gold medal with Team USA at the London Olympics. He bypassed the parties back home to visit with the children we serve. The trip made a huge impact on him and everyone he came into contact with, from the children at a shelter for street kids to UNICEF staff. Back in the U.S., Tyson has helped raise thousands of dollars for UNICEF and has served as an important advocate for the organization to millions of basketball fans. As aspiring photographer, Tyson hosted a high-profile photo gallery exhibit, featuring his own work. The event generated extensive media coverage and thousands of dollars for UNICEF. Though Tyson is very busy during his packed NBA season (82 regular season games, plus pre-season and playoff games), he has made sure to carve out time for UNICEF. Tyson provided the most popular live auction experience at our annual Snowflake Ball when he donated a behind-the-scenes day with him at Knicks practice. Tyson has also spent countless hours using his voice to advocate for UNICEF on social media and with the press. He’s helped UNICEF raise awareness on everything from emergency relief efforts to the UNICEF Tap Project. It would be great if you could take a minute to vote for Tyson now and recognize all of his efforts on behalf of UNICEF’s fight for the survival and development of every child.
