On January 28th the Southern California Regional Office welcomed Susan Bissell, Chief of Child Protection at UNICEF, as keynote speaker at the latest Saving Children: A Speakers Series Luncheon. Supporters of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, as well as leaders in the academic, corporate and philanthropic communities, gathered at Mr. C Hotel in Beverly Hills for an enriching and intimate discussion, bringing to light the complexities involved in protecting children during times of crisis.
As head of UNICEF’s Child Protection initiatives globally, Susan oversees a team of specialists who devise and implement UNICEF’s efforts for children affected by armed conflict, violence, exploitation, abuse and more. Susan’s presentation offered a unique and expert perspective, as she spoke passionately about the need to protect the world’s most vulnerable children who face hardships associated with physical labor, exploitation and trafficking. Highlighting stories and cultural practices from her travels in India and Sri Lanka, two countries of 170 where UNICEF maintains a presence specifically to promote the security of children, Susan shared heartwarming details of meeting children and, with UNICEF’s support, watching them grow and develop into happy, adjusted, young adults.
Times of conflict, disaster and disease make already vulnerable children that much more vulnerable to violence, exploitation, abuse and neglect. Susan inspired guests to take action in supporting UNICEF’s efforts to strengthen systems that bring security and hope to our children.
