Life After Harvey: Getting Houston's Children Back to School

Displaced by the storm, students and teachers need educational supplies and counseling. UNICEF USA and partners are pitching in to help.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, one of the most damaging natural disasters in U.S. history, those hardest hit by the storm are struggling to pick up the pieces of their lives. Huge sections of Houston are underwater. Families have lost everything. UNICEF USA is there to help.

Huge sections of Houston are underwater. Families have lost everything.

At the heart of UNICEF's mission to save and protect the world's children is the conviction that education transforms lives and builds better futures. Hurricane Harvey has left more than 1 million children in Texas unable to start school, with up to 3 million impacted across the region. In the weeks and months ahead, UNICEF USA and partners will be helping some of Houston's most disadvantaged children resume their educations.

Providing support to educators, parents and caregivers in some of the most vulnerable neighborhoods, UNICEF USA and our partners are:

  • supporting training for educators in 90 schools to identify distress and trauma among children whose lives have been turned upside-down by the storm
  • giving care packages with classroom supplies and learning materials to 420 teachers whose schools have been damaged or destroyed
  • training caregivers and parents of children under age 6 to help young children cope with distress and heal from the traumatic events of the storm
  • empowering 5,000 children to recognize themselves as survivors with the power to do good by participating in UNICEF Kid Power — the world's first Wearable-for-Good® allowing kids to get active and unlock funding for lifesaving therapeutic food packets for severely malnourished children around the world
