Champions voted overwhelmingly to send nearly $200,000 of 2011 collections to support a youth-led mapping initiative for children in favelas de Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

From April 10–13, 2013, four Champions for Children (Alexandra Pedreros, Max Mierbeth, Sean Nowicke, and Martin Beltran), saw first-hand your Change for Good collections in actions in Rio de Janeiro. As a registered Champion for Children, one of the benefits is the opportunity to attend a field visit and literally see the CHANGE you are helping UNICEF bring to children’s lives.

While in Brazil, Champions visited a school where they met and spoke with young children and adolescents; participated in a workshop on the rights of pregnant women and their babies and had the opportunity to hear the women’s concerns, worries and needs; and got to witness an innovative program where youth are using digital technology to assist them in dealing with problems that need immediate attention.

“I have been to Brazil before many times, on vacation and as a working crew member. But, going with UNICEF, I saw Brazil in a whole new way. And witnessing first-hand what UNICEF does, gave me a full understanding of the importance of my role as a Champion for Children” said Martin Beltran.” “I have to thank UNICEF for providing me with this learning experience. The skills, tools, and techniques I have acquired through this field visit to Brazil will enable me to educate others about Change for Good, Champions for Children and UNICEF”.
