UNICEF USA Mourns the Passing of Mario M. Cuomo (1932 - 2015)

“... to accept that challenge of building the future, we must start where the future always starts: with children.” — Mario Cuomo

Surrounded by UNICEF staff and other guests, New York State Governor Mario Cuomo receives a kiss from his granddaughter, at the initiation of Day of the African Child celebrations at UNICEF House on 15 June, 1993.

The U.S. Fund for UNICEF mourns the loss of Mario M. Cuomo, the former governor of New York and eloquent friend of New York’s children and children around the world.

During his three terms of service, Governor Cuomo was steadfast in focusing a spotlight on children’s problems and the needs of the most vulnerable children. In his 1988 State of the State address, he declared the next 10 years, “The New York State Decade of the Child,” helping to firmly elevate critical issues like maternal and prenatal health, infant mortality, nutritional assistance, early childhood education and child health into the state’s political discourse.

Thank you, Governor Mario Cuomo, for helping to put children first.
