The New England Regional Board of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF is excited to welcome three new G. Barrie Landry fellows to Boston to complete a Graduate-Level Child Protection Certificate program from Harvard School of Public Health.  This joint project between UNICEF and the François-Xavier Bagnoud (FXB) Center at Harvard University aims to better enable child protection professionals to effectively prevent and respond to cases of exploitation, violence, and abuse against children. This formal interdisciplinary graduate-level program promises to professionalize the Child Protection sector and expand the number of qualified national and international policy-makers and field workers. Courses ranging from Issues in Maternal and Child Health Programs to International Perspectives on Justice for Children provide students of the School of Public Health a multidimensional education on issues pertaining to the protection of children including health, education, human rights, gender, and social services and welfare.

Hailing from their home countries of Ghana, Cambodia, and Yemen, this first cohort of fellows represents the heart and soul of UNICEF’s work for children.  In her role as UNICEF Child Protection Officer in Ghana, Emelia Allan works to improve birth registration and communication for behavior and social change in the protection of children. Noor Al-Kasadi, Senior Child Protection Specialist in Yemen, focuses on the prevention of violence in schools, psychosocial support for children, and the elimination of child trafficking. As UNICEF Program Assistant for the Children in Need of Special Protection Program in Cambodia, Chivith Rottanak works to strengthen child protection service delivery and to improve national policies for alternative care and juvenile justice.
