Obama calls for steps that will help us get to "zero"

President Barack Obama has announced that his Administration is crafting a comprehensive Global Health Initiative. He is seeking an integrated approach to global health that will include, in his words, efforts "to combat diseases that claim the lives of 26,000 children each day." He intends to invest in measures to "reduce mortality of mothers and children under five, saving millions of lives."

We who Believe in Zero"Zero children and mothers dying deaths we can prevent"welcome President Obama's leadership. We are greatly encouraged that he is committing his Administration to the path that leads to Zero!

The President appreciates that this effort requires both leadership and resources. This will take planning and a multi-year strategy. He pledged that his Administration will "identify specific initiatives, quantitative goals, and appropriate funding levels beginning in 2011."

Caryl Stern, President and CEO of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, sent this letter to the President to let him know that we who Believe in Zerosalute his Global Health Initiative and stand ready to help him:

Dear Mr. President: On behalf of UNICEF's supporters across the country, I salute you for the proposal you have announced to develop a comprehensive Global Health Initiative. Your focus on child survival and maternal health is especially welcome. Over 28,000 citizens have signed the U.S. Fund for UNICEF's petition to urge you to propose a Presidential Initiative to Accelerate Child Survival. That symbolic number reflects the number of children who die unnecessarily every day: as you noted in your statement, "26,000 children around the world die every day from extreme poverty and preventable diseases." We believe we can"and must"reduce that number to zero. We see the concerns we have raised reflected in your outline for a Global Health Initiative. In your proposal, you said, "These plans will be coordinated as part of the comprehensive global health strategy to identify specific initiatives, quantitative goals, and appropriate funding levels beginning in 2011." We at the U.S. Fund for UNICEF and all who "Believe in Zero" want to work with you and your Administration to craft an effective global strategy to promote child survival and maternal health. We look forward to joining with you to prevent children and mothers from dying unnecessarily. Our engaged constituency stands ready to help you. Thank you for your leadership for children. Sincerely, Caryl Stern signature Caryl M. Stern President and CEO U.S. Fund for UNICEF

Zero advocates will continue to urge the President to focus on child survival and maternal health as key elements of his Global Health Initiative. And we will seek opportunities to work with his Administration as they develop their plans for 2011. Visit our advocacy pages to learn how you can help!
