The stats are gut cinching. Malaria is the largest child killer in Africa. This treatable and preventable disease still infects as many as 500 million people every year and claims the lives of approximately 3,000 children every day. But UNICEF and others have made advances against malaria. In 16 out of 20 African countries where data is available, the use of insecticide-treated bed nets has tripled since 2000. The net is a simple and cheap intervention, proven to dramatically reduce malarial infections. Assisted by several partners, UNICEF has become the largest provider of insecticide-treated bed nets, distributing more than 18 million nets in 2007 alone. UNICEF is also a founding partner, along with the World Health Organization and others, of the Roll Back Malaria coalition, established in 1998 with the goal of halving the burden of malaria by 2010.
