NBA CaresUNICEF TAP Project 2011

In March 2011, NBA Cares and NBA star Dwight "Superman" Howard joined the U.S. Fund for UNICEF's Celebrity Tap campaign to celebrate the same clean water that we enjoy every day, and highlight children's need to provide safe, clean drinking water to the children all over the world.  With a donation to the UNICEF Tap Project, you can enter to win Dwight's water – one of 6 famous waters in the Celebrity Tap Pack.  Find out more at www.uniceftapproject.org.

The award-winning UNICEF Tap Project, which takes place during World Water Week, March 20–26, and throughout the month of March, is the U.S. Fund for UNICEF's nationwide campaign celebrating UNICEF's work to improve access to safe water and sanitation facilities in schools and communities in more than 100 countries around the world.

Partner since 2001

Total donated: More than $2 million

The partnership between the NBA and UNICEF leverages the power of basketball to support UNICEF's lifesaving programs around the globe, with a particular focus on emergency relief and grass roots efforts to foster youth peer-to-peer involvement around the world.

The NBA brings attention to important global issues through NBA Cares, its social responsibility initiative. As the worldwide popularity of basketball continues to grow, the NBA works to contribute to the greater good by partnering with international organizations like UNICEF and supporting global causes such as the fight against HIV/AIDS,  malaria prevention and natural disaster relief efforts.

Partnership Summary

The NBA supports UNICEF's recovery work in Haiti

The NBA and NBA Cares are key partners in UNICEF's efforts in Haiti and have joined the UNICEF Haiti 365 project - the U.S. Fund's initiative to allow supporters to stand for the children of Haiti 365 days of the year.

The NBA and NBA Cares know our world can be a loud place, and children can get lost in that noise. We are grateful to NBA, its teams and players as they help us carry the voices of Haiti's children. You can join us at www.unicefhaiti365.org to take action.

Fundraising for emergencies

The NBA, its teams and players have been quick to respond following emergencies, including the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and the South Asia tsunami in 2004. Following the Haiti earthquake, over 20 NBA teams and countless individual players contributed generously to support the children of Haitiby providing supplies for immediate medical, nutrition, and education support, and for the longer term efforts of rebuilding a nation.

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF

The NBA participates in a variety of special events centered around Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, which gets children involved in supporting UNICEF's work and has been one of America's best-loved Halloween traditions for 60 years. NBA involvement includes collecting coins at NBA games, as well as personal support by individual players visiting schools that fundraise for Trick-or-Treat.

UNICEF's Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS campaign

In May 2006, the NBA Cares program announced its support of UNICEF's global HIV/AIDS campaign, Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS. To launch the partnership, NBA Entertainment, UNICEF and the U.S. Fund for UNICEF produced a series of television PSAs featuring players that were aired on major television stations in multiple countries to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS prevention, testing, and treatment.

Basketball without Borders

Basketball without Borders—the NBA's global basketball development and community outreach program—uses sports to influence positive social change in communities around the globe. The initiative engages current and former NBA players and team personnel as camp coaches to work with children, promote friendship, healthy living and HIV and AIDS awareness and prevention. Each year, the NBA invites UNICEF to participate in the camps through UNICEF-led HIV and AIDS interactive educational seminars, fundraising events and other activities.
