The Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society, the official philanthropic organization of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, with approximately 480 Chapters nationwide, launched a partnership in 1979 with the U.S. Fund for UNICEF.

Dedicated to supporting programs to aid the poor, the sick, and the elderly, the Society’s collaboration with UNICEF has included helping to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus as well as supporting Ethiopian famine relief and emergency assistance in Pakistan and other countries.

Improved health services for mothers and newborns in Pakistan

After the devastating 2010 floods in Pakistan, UNICEF teamed up with the Punjab Health Department to initiate 24-hour emergency obstetric and neonatal services for flood-affected women and children in Dera Ghazi Khan District. In one town alone, more than 460 successful deliveries have taken place in the last seven months at a hospital that had not been able to offer obstetric and neonatal health services for the past 14 years.

One year after the floods in Pakistan, prototype school gives hope to children

The unprecedented floods of 2010 in Pakistan forced the bulk of the population of Mullanwala to move to safer ground. When flood waters receded and people returned, they discovered that not a single structure in the village was standing. Not even the one-room Masjid school. UNICEF and its local partner is working on construction of 500 Transitional School Structures by December 2011.
