Total Donated: $3 million+
In 2009, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF was thrilled to announce the expansion of its partnership with The Prudential Foundation, which is committed to drastically improving the education and life outcomes of children in Latin America.
Since its founding in 1875, The Prudential Insurance Company of America has grown to become one of the largest life insurance companies in the U.S., and its commitment to the communities where its employees live and work is mirrored in its dedication to working on behalf of children and underserved communities globally. The Prudential Foundation, which was founded in 1977 as a not-for-profit corporation supported by The Prudential Insurance Company of America, promotes sustainable communities and leverages its giving to improve social outcomes, with a focus on education, and economic and civic development. This support is complimented by the generosity of countless Prudential employees who have supported UNICEF programs focused on improving the health, safety, and outcomes of children around the world.
Partnership Summary
Global
Recognizing the role of education in building opportunities for youth, The Prudential Foundation is underwriting landmark research about the impact of education in economic development for middle-income countries. This research, beginning in 2010, will offer a substantive look at the value of education in building long-term economic security, with a particular focus on the work being conducted by UNICEF to build educational capacity in countries throughout the world and the importance of public investment from national governments. Through this research, emerging markets will have evidence to support the development of high-quality educational systems that provide access to every child.
Urban Platform Program, Brazil
In the most impoverished communities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo, the Prudential Foundation is impacting the lives of an estimated 180,000 children and adolescents with the Urban Platform Program. Through an integrated, long-term approach, this UNICEF initiated program aims to bring all sectors of society together to solve the problems facing children. Working with partner organizations Movimento de Organizacao Comunitaria and Centro Dom Jose Brandao de Castro, the program engages communities to participate in the day-to-day activities of schools. With a particular focus on indigenous populations, the program empowers young people to break the vicious cycle of poverty and exclusion, and to ensure better life conditions for themselves, their families, and their communities.
"Create Your Space", Mexico
Since 2007, The Prudential Foundation has supported UNICEF’s Crea Tu Espacio (“Create Your Space”) initiative, working within the schools of Mexico. In partnership with local human rights-based organization SERAJ, “Create Your Space” provides an innovative approach to combating the violence children face in the classroom. The initiative represents a groundbreaking approach for Mexico: pioneering the integration of civic involvement in the schools is a departure from the government-focused educational norms in this country. The initiative looks to reduce violence, discrimination, and bullying, and reduce the drop-out rate by integrating the participation of local communities with the creation of a more open dialogue between teachers, school administrators, students, and parents.
