U.S. Fund for UNICEF awarded highest rating for fiscal responsibility by Charity Navigator

Among 3 percent of charities to receive elite status for sixth consecutive year

NEW YORK (July 15, 2010) — The U.S. Fund for UNICEF announced today the organization has received its  sixth consecutive 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, Americas' premier independent charity evaluator. Only 3 percent of the charities rated have received at least 6 consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that the U.S. Fund for UNICEF consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way, and outperforms most other charities in America. The U.S. Fund for UNICEF also meets the Better Business Bureau's Wise Giving Alliance's Standards for Charity Accountability.

"As the non profit sector continues to grow at unprecedented pace, savvy donors are demanding more accountability, transparency and quantifiable results for the charities they choose to support with their hard-earned dollars," said Charity Navigator President and CEO Ken Berger. "This exceptional designation from Charity Navigator, differentiates the U.S. Fund for UNICEF from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust."

The elite rating highlights the fine work of efficient charities and provides donors with essential information needed to give them greater confidence in the charitable choices they make. UNICEF's work is funded exclusively by voluntary contributions from a diverse range of supporters including individuals, non-governmental organizations, corporations, foundations and governments—all of whom are invaluable partners in the fight for children's survival.

"We are grateful to Charity Navigator for recognizing the trust and support that our donors place in us," said U.S. Fund for UNICEF President and CEO Caryl Stern. "UNICEF will continue to make the most of every dollar raised through innovative, affordable and proven strategies. With the commitment and generosity of our supporters, we will reach the day when zero children die of preventable causes."

About UNICEF

UNICEF has saved more children's lives than any other humanitarian organization in the world. Working in over 150 countries, UNICEF provides children with health care, clean water, nutrition, education, emergency relief, and more. The U.S. Fund for UNICEF supports UNICEF's work through fundraising, advocacy, and education in the United States.

UNICEF is at the forefront of efforts to reduce child mortality worldwide.  There has been substantial progress—the annual number of under-five deaths dropped from 13 million in 1990 to 8.8 million in 2008.  But still, 24,000 children die each day from preventable causes. Our mission is to do whatever it takes to make that number zero by giving children the essentials for a safe and healthy childhood. For more information, visit www.unicefusa.org
