UPS chief named to U.S. Fund for UNICEF's board of directors
NEW YORK (September 15, 2009) — The U.S. Fund for UNICEF today announced the appointment of Daniel J. Brutto as its newest board member. Brutto, who serves as president of UPS International, brings 34 years of operations, finance, marketing and business development experience to the Fund, which serves as the primary fundraising arm for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in the United States.
A native of Chicago, Brutto oversees all international package, freight forwarding and logistics businesses for UPS, as well as U.S. international package services. He is also a member of UPS Management Committee, which is responsible for day-to-day management of the company.
Brutto's appointment to the Fund's board of directors follows a concerted effort by the organization to deepen its partnerships with the private sector and bring to bear the full breath of corporate expertise and resources in support of UNICEF programs worldwide. In particular, Brutto's extensive supply chain and logistics experience will be leveraged to help UNICEF's emergency operations which respond to over 200 humanitarian crises each year.
"Unfortunately 24,000 children under the age of five continue to die every day from preventable causes ranging from pneumonia to diarrhea, an unacceptable situation exacerbated by the ever increasing number and complexity of emergencies which devastate communities around the globe," said Caryl Stern, President and CEO, U.S. Fund for UNICEF. "Dan shares our belief and conviction that the only acceptable number of preventable child deaths is zero, and we are thrilled to have him by our side as we endeavor to reach that goal."
The 53 year old Brutto joins a board of 19 directors chaired by attorney Anthony Pantaleoni and comes with a wealth of international experience. In the 1990s, while part of the UPS international Acquisition and financial Integration team, he was responsible for establishing UPS operations in 35 countries across Europe and Asia including the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.
Brutto and his wife Lisa have two daughters and currently reside in Duluth, Georgia.
ABOUT UNICEF
UNICEF has saved more children's lives than any other humanitarian organization in the world. Working in over 150 countries, UNICEF provides children with health care, clean water, nutrition, education, emergency relief, and more. The U.S. Fund for UNICEF supports UNICEF's work through fundraising, advocacy, and education in the United States.
UNICEF is at the forefront of efforts to reduce child mortality worldwide. There has been substantial progress—the annual number of under-five deaths dropped from 13 million in 1990 to 8.8 million in 2008. But still, 24,000 children die each day from preventable causes. Our mission is to do whatever it takes to make that number zero by giving children the essentials for a safe and healthy childhood. For more information, visit www.unicefusa.org.
