Urgent needs for the children of Sudan

NEW YORK (March 16, 2009)—Regardless of the complexities, politics, or the cultural issues at play, UNICEF does what it takes to save children’s lives. Staff on the ground are working around the clock to meet children’s immediate needs, following the suspension of NGO partners in Sudan.

While a full assessment of the impact is continuing, UNICEF has already warned in a Humanitarian Action Update that critical programs such as clean water, sanitation, health care and nutrition for hundreds of thousands of children will be affected.

The next three months will be especially critical, but the impact of the absence of NGO partners, and the resulting loss of capacities, will continue to be felt well beyond this period. The biggest impact will be in Darfur, where an estimated 2.7 million people—half of whom are children—have been displaced from their homes over the last four years and and where the suspended NGOs were key partners in the provision of lifesaving services.

We need to keep the water flowing, the food supplies delivered, and the vaccines administered—or children will die completely preventable deaths. Please make a donation if you can, and spread the word to friends and family using the links below.
