Education enhances lives, ends the cycle of poverty and disease and provides the means for sustainable development, yet many children worldwide do not have access to a basic primary school education. Children are being denied access to an education, a basic human right which would provide them with the knowledge and skills to adopt healthier lifestyles, protect themselves from diseases like HIV/AIDS, and take an active role in their societies.

Donate NowIn Brazil, Ethiopia and India, many children do not attend school, and children who do attend suffer from poor quality schools, teachers and resources, ultimately resulting in a poor quality education.

That is where UNICEF and ING come in.  ING's Chances for Children program is supporting UNICEF education initiatives in Brazil, Ethiopia and India with the goal of delivering access to quality education to 50,000 children by the end of 2007.

In Brazil, 1.1 million children and adolescents do not know how to read or write. Low income households are unable to send children to school where often the quality of education is poor.

UNICEF's Education for Inclusion program in Brazil supports initiatives which guarantee children the right to attend school, learn in supportive environments and develop citizenship skills for exercising their rights. The partnership between ING and UNICEF will help raise children above the poverty line and give them hope for a better future.

In Ethiopia, 36.6 percent of the school-age population is not enrolled in primary schools, which are characterized as having low enrollment/attendance and a high drop out and/or repetition rate. Although education is free in Ethiopia, many children don't enroll and/or attend school for several reasons. For example some children must travel long distances to reach a formal school only to find the school lacking in school resources and adequately-trained teachers. Other barriers to education include expenses for school uniforms and supplies as well as malnourishment and poor sanitary conditions.

The UNICEF project in Ethiopia will ensure that nearly 7,500 children will have access to primary school for the first time in their lives thanks to the support provided by ING's Chances for Children program.

UNICEF is an active partner in the education programs launched by the Indian government which will focus on access, quality and equity in education throughout India and especially in disadvantaged communities. Instead of going to work, children are sent to school without regard to class, caste or gender, ending the cycle of illiteracy and poverty. To improve upon resource-starved schools and traditional teaching methods, 14,000 quality packages have been sent out to communities to bolster the quality of school curricula.

You can be part of ING's Chances for Children program and give children in Brazil, Ethiopia and India an opportunity to go to school.  A donation of only $36.00 will educate a child for one year.  Donate now and help brighten someone's future.
