A man carries an injured child outside Hotel Villa Creole in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010 after the strongest earthquake in more than 200 years struck Haiti.

The January 12 earthquake that rocked Haiti has proven the most devastating in the impoverished nation's recorded history.  Haiti, which has struggled to recover from a series of natural disasters prior to this most recent crisis,  has long suffered from inadequate access to water, sanitation, and health services.  Tuesday's quake leaves in its wake scarcity of life-threatening proportions—without food, clean water, or much-needed medicines, the lives of an estimated 1.5 million children impacted by the disaster depend on a quick and effective emergency response.

donte now buttonThe National Hockey League has partnered with the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to meet the dire need of Haiti's children for medicine, food, clean water, and health services.  UNICEF has maintained a presence in Haiti since 1949, and is well prepared to leverage its resources and expertise to save children and preserve childhoods.  Despite considerable damage done to UNICEF facilities in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, UNICEF is already hard at work ensuring the wellbeing of children throughout the impacted region.

UNICEF is committed to developing long-term solutions to Haiti's needs, providing nutrition, health, sanitation, and education services to address the impact of poverty on the children of Haiti.

UNICEF works to provide aid to children in emergencies.  We know children are the most vulnerable population in any emergency situation—more susceptible to infection, dehydration, and injury than adults, which is why UNICEF is exhaustive in its efforts to save children's lives and safeguard children's rights, no matter the conditions.  On the ground helping the children of Haiti long before Tuesday's emergency, UNICEF will remain long after the threat has passed to ensure the safety and security of all Haiti's children.

Donate now to support UNICEF's ongoing work for the children of Haiti.
