The George Harrison Fund for UNICEF and ACUI Campus Challenge
This fall and winter (2008-2009), groups of students on college campuses all across America are helping to raise funds for UNICEF toward its mission of saving children's lives. UNICEF is partnering with the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) and the George Harrison Fund for UNICEF in the Help Us Save Some Lives Campus Challenge from September 5, 2008 to February 28, 2009.
In 1971, George Harrison helped organize two concerts at Madison Square Garden, which eventually raised over $15 million for the impoverished Bangladeshi people. By participating in the Campus Challenge, college students honor his legacy and are committed to helping save some lives!
ACUI Executive Director Marsha Herman-Betzen believes that college students are the greatest vehicle through which to generate advocacy for important issues such as child survival. "We are so excited to be working with UNICEF's cause to promote social responsibility and bring awareness and fundraising to campuses," she said.

The George Harrison Fund for UNICEF
With the lyrics "Now I'm asking all of you, help us save some lives," George Harrison turned music into a political and social force. August 1, 2008 marked the 37th anniversary of George Harrison's historic Concert for Bangladesh.
In 1971, Harrison staged two concerts at New York's Madison Square Garden that brought together a star-studded cast of musicians—including Ravi Shankar, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Leon Russell and Billy Preston—to alert the world to the plight of the Bangladeshi people. At the time, the country was ravaged by floods, famine and civil war, which forced 10 million people—mostly women and children—to flee their homes.
The Concert for Bangladesh was one of the most ambitious humanitarian efforts in rock music history. It produced an extraordinary contribution for UNICEF, exceeding $15 million and truly showed the powerful difference just one individual can make.
The George Harrison Fund for UNICEF is a joint venture between the Harrison family and the U.S. Fund for UNICEF that aims to support UNICEF programs providing lifesaving assistance to children caught in humanitarian emergencies.
The Association of College Unions International
Founded in 1914, ACUI is a nonprofit higher education association that brings together college union and campus activities professionals and students from hundreds of schools and seven countries. Its members strive to create a well-considered plan for the community life of the campus and create avenues for students to lead and learn outside of the classroom.
ACUI supports this mission by providing competency-based educational programs and resources, advocacy about the union as more than a building, and services that connect colleagues and help them solve problems. Rooted in the collaborative efforts of undergraduate student leaders, the Association's core purpose is now to advance all campus community builders. Visit www.acui.org to learn more.
