Veronica Pollard

Pollard,Veronica.jpgVeronica Pollard joined the U.S. Fund for UNICEF in April 2010 as Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications.

She is responsible for all branding, marketing and communications functions for UNICEF within the United States.  Previously, she was Vice President of Communications and Public Policy for Save the Children.

Before joining Save the Children, Ms. Pollard had a long career in the private sector in communications, marketing, advertising, philanthropy, and journalism. She was Group Vice President, Corporate Communications at Toyota Motor North America, the holding company for Toyota's sales and manufacturing operations in North America.

Before that, she was Vice President of Corporate Public Relations for ABC, and prior to that was with Cosmo Public Relations Corporation in Tokyo. Earlier, Ms. Pollard was a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle and worked for Newsweek magazine. She began her career as a first grade teacher in Harlem.

Ms. Pollard received a B.S. degree from Boston University and an M.A. degree from Columbia University's Teachers College. She has been very active in the non-profit sector and currently serves on the boards of the Museum for African Art and The Doe Fund (an organization that supports people who are homeless), both in New York.

UNICEF racing to prevent a full-scale humanitarian crisis in West and Central Africa

In an effort to avert a large-scale loss of life due to malnutrition and disease, UNICEF is ramping up its operations in eight countries in the Sahel region of West and Central Africa. It is estimated that across the region more than one million children will suffer in 2012 from severe acute malnutrition, a life-threatening condition that requires immediate treatment. An initial $67 million is urgently needed for UNICEF’s emergency relief operations to save children’s lives and prevent a humanitarian disaster from unfolding.

Improving water and sanitation in Haiti

An important part of UNICEF's recovery work in Haiti is focused on improving water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). Following the devastating earthquake many displaced Haitians were forced to live in camps with limited access to clean water and sanitation. A devastating cholera outbreak made access to clean drinking water and proper sanitation more important than ever. UNICEF is providing WASH services in camps and is also providing schools with chlorine tabs, posters about cholera prevention and soap.
