South Africa held its second "Africa Water Week" in November to boost the continent’s response to safe water and access to sanitation. Organized by the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) with support from UN agencies and partners, Africa Water Week is a direct response to the "Sharm El Sheikh" Commitments on water and sanitation that were made by the African Union Heads of state and Government in 2008.

"Building back better" for children has been the mission of UNICEF’s recovery work in the countries that were devastated by the Indian Ocean tsunami five years ago. Some 230,000 people perished in the tsunami on December 26, 2004, which also washed away homes, schools and communities—many of them already poor and remote. In the years since, the task of rebuilding has been viewed as an opportunity to bring improved social services, clean water, and sturdier schools to the tsunami-affected areas.

In early November, heavy rains from Hurricane Ida battered El Salvador displacing 75,000 people from their homes. Nearly 6,000 -- a third of them children -- are still living in converted classrooms set up as shelters. UNICEF is providing psycho-social counseling services and recreation kits to help children regain a sense of normalcy. But flood-affected families are still in need of assistance.
